INTERNSHIP POSITION – MARINE SCIENCE EDUCATION
Do you love sharing your knowledge of the ocean with others? The Discovery Hall Programs (DHP) of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) has a paid internship position available in marine science environmental education. DISL is the marine research and education facility for the state of Alabama. The Discovery Hall Programs, one of the largest marine education programs on the Gulf coast, is well established and has reached students of all ages through education and outreach programs for over forty years. HOW WILL YOU GROW PROFESSIONALLY?
- You will be part of an experienced, collaborative team that develops and teaches hands-on informal marine education programs to K-12 students, teachers and the general public.
- You will take the ocean into classrooms throughout the state of Alabama and the Southeast with our traveling BayMobile outreach program communicating coastal connections for students with limited exposure to the ocean.
- You will teach on an island campus with renowned scientists, increasing your knowledge of marine science and incorporating their research findings into lessons and programs.
- You will develop and sharpen pedagogical skills in informal settings, which include the classroom, field, lab, as well as distance learning and public outreach.
WHAT’S REQUIRED?
Applicants should
- have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in marine or environmental science, biology or secondary science education.
- have some formal or informal teaching exposure. Strong candidates are those who have demonstrated knowledge in marine science and successful experience working with students.
- be reliable, dynamic, creative, innovative, enthusiastic, team-oriented, positive-thinking, flexible, a self-starter and willing to get wet and muddy.
- enjoy working with people, and able to work with a variety of audiences, abilities, backgrounds, ages, and all types of learners.
- have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication, as well as technology and organizational skills.
- have sufficient physical strength and agility to lead boat and field-based activities, lift and carry up to 30 pounds, as well as the ability to swim and work outside year-round in Alabama weather (hot, cold, humid, windy, very sunny).
- be a US citizen and have or be able to obtain a valid AL driver’s license, Class B CDL, first aid, and CPR certification.
- be able to work some nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel is also required.
OTHER THINGS YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW
- Expect 40 hours a week of wonderful opportunities!
- We are looking for candidates who can start soon and work through the calendar year.
- Housing is not provided.
- The Intern reports to the Chair of DHP, but works with all DHP staff members as well as our summer counselor staff.
- We are requesting a minimum commitment of 9 mths.
- Salary is commensurate with experience.
- DISL is an EOE/AA/M/F/D employer. A background check and pre-employment drug test will be required. Participation in DISL’s ongoing drug-testing program is required.
