Job Opening - Student Worker Position

The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) is looking for a highly motivated NSU undergrad or graduate student to work part-time as a student worker on campus. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in educating the public about coastal Louisiana while at the same time gaining skills in communication, public relation activities, office work, publication design and creation, farm activities, volunteer activities, and other related team activities.

Types of Services Required:

Services may include one or more of the following activities: Complete requests and mail outs for products from Web, phone, and email responses. Assist office coordinator with daily duties including phones, coping materials, and general office management. Assist with preparations and clean-up for outreach events such as speaking engagements, exhibits, teacher workshops, presentations, and meetings. Assist with outreach events (volunteer events, cleanups, workshops, symposiums, etc.) as available. Assist with work at the NSU farm on behalf of BTNEP. Additional duties include managing and organizing data, researching and compiling news clip files and related publications. In addition, students may be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Expertise/Skills:

Work experience or academic experience in science, public relations, outreach, or education. Candidate must have knowledge of MS Office, have good telephone skills, be able to interact with the public on a daily basis. Candidate must be willing to learn new skills as he/she interacts with BTNEP scientific staff and outreach staff.


Qualified candidates must be a currently registered student (Undergrad/ Graduate) for the duration of the job. Undergraduate students must be at a level no lower than sophomore level. The student worker will be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license with no tickets, complete a background check as well as complete mandatory trainings including defensive driving, code of ethics, sexual harassment, and any other assigned online training courses.

Description of Working Conditions:

Work will be performed primarily in an office environment with some work offsite at the farm and volunteer events. This is a part-time position with a maximum of 20 hours per week during school and 30 hours per week during summer. This position, while flexible to accommodate student’s class schedule, is a professional office position that requires punctuality and accountability.

Required Skills:

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Strong skills in Word and Excel
• Must work well in a team oriented environment
• Organization skills and attention to detail are a must
• Must be able to communicate via phone/ email in a professional manner
• Must work a consistent schedule.
• Ability to perform tasks in a timely and accurate manner
