Derelict Crab Trap Cleanup

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CRAB TRAP REMOVAL EVENT

THIBODAUX, LA – The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP), in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), is looking for volunteers for their crab trap removal event that will take place on February 20, 2016.

Boat owners are asked to volunteer to aid in the removal of derelict or “ghost” crab traps from the Barataria Basin near Lafitte, LA. The event will take place from 8:30am-3:30pm at Jean Lafitte Harbor located at the end of LA 45. The goal of the event is to remove the traps, which increase mortality of blue crabs and other species, as well as, create navigation hazards. The project is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program and LDWF.

Boat owners will be given the equipment needed to collect the traps and transport them in the owner’s vessel. Additional volunteers are welcome to come and man the unloading dock to help with the smashing and the correct disposal of the traps.

The state’s Derelict Crab Trap Removal Program has been a cooperative effort removing more than 25,000 crab traps from Louisiana’s coast for more than a decade.

For more information on how to volunteer for this event, please contact Seth Moncrief, BTNEP Volunteer Coordinator at 985-447-0868 or via email at seth@btnep.org.
